I ❤ NY NOV 26, 1979 at STUDIO 54 9PM $20 Entry invite Milton Glaser
A great item that celebrates NYC. A moment the then 2 year old ad campaign for NYC designed by Milton Glaser and celebrated at the legendary Studio 54! 1979, NYC was bankrupt 2 years earlier, A great blackout darkened the City, and crime made NYC ‘Fear City’. It was a party nearing the end of the 1970’s! A great document…I ❤ NY!
In 1976, William S. Doyle, Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Department of Commerce hired advertising agency Wells Rich Greene to develop a marketing campaign for the State of New York. Doyle also recruited Milton Glaser, a productive graphic designer to work on the campaign and create a design based on Wells Rich Greene's advertising campaign. Glaser's initial sketch to accompany the agency's "I Love New York" slogan was conceived in a taxi. It comprised the letter S and L heart shape, followed by SL, all on the same line. As the idea developed, he decided to stack the I and the heart shape on a line above the NY characters, later stating that he may have been "subliminally" influenced by Robert Indiana's LOVE pop art image.
Schrager and Rubell opened the Studio 54 nightclub on April 26, 1977, as disco was gaining popularity in the U.S. Infamous for its celebrity guest lists, quixotic entry policies, extravagant events, rampant drug use, and sexual hedonism, Studio 54 closed in 1980 after Schrager and Rubell were convicted of tax evasion. A scaled-back version of the nightclub continued under new management before becoming the Ritz rock club in 1989, then the Cabaret Royale bar in 1994.
