For your consideration a RARE offering of a x3 item lot a 1992 Musée Cantini Marseille France exhibition poster of Jean-Michel Basquiat and the accompanying catalog and a small program/guide booklet (June - September 1992) for the Musée Cantini and Museums in Marseille. All 3 items are extremely RARE and sold together. I have never seen this poster in the 20+ years I have looked for it. This Retrospective is the first after Basquiat's death of 1988 (August 12, 1988- aged 27).

This Musée Cantini Poster marks Basquiat's first Museum Retrospective post death in France, Europe, and the World. This exhibition is before The Whitney's Museum of American Art in New York retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. The Whitney's was Basquiat's 1st American retrospective after his death (not the first overall). As such, The poster represents an early and first institutional canonization of his work post death. Very important and intimately RARE.

The Poster Image is iconic as it uses a 1982 portrait taken by Harlem Renaissance photographer James Van Der Zee. ..."This photograph of a 21-year-old Jean-Michel Basquiat is a testament to Van Der Zee’s tenacity and sheer dedication to the photographic medium having taken this portrait in 1982, the year before he would pass away at the admirable age of 96. A poetic complex dialogue of rise and fall is at play here between these two creative men, a transience in the person of Basquiat versus longevity in that of Van Der Zee.
