Edward Ruscha + Harald Szeemann Documenta 5 Exhibition Poster + Catalog 1972

Edward Ruscha + Harald Szeemann Documenta 5 Exhibition Poster + Catalog 1972

$1,750.00

This rare offering of the iconic Poster mounted on linen and the Catalogue designed by Ed Ruscha in 1972. Documenta 5 curated by Harald Szeemann is famous and a who’s who of the early movements and leaders of Painting, Pop, minimalism, and more. The design of the catalogue is a binder-format catalogue which has been parodied by the San Francisco Art Dealer Steven Leiber (see example I am selling as well).

Documenta 5 occurred from Jun 30, 1972 to Oct 8, 1972 held at the Neue Galerie and Museum Fridericianum both in Kassel, West Germany. The Documenta 5 official title was “Befragung der Realität – Bildwelten heute/Questioning Reality – Pictorial worlds today”. On both the Poster and Catalogue the Orange background features Ruscha’s Army of Ants (with shadows) that form the number 5. The design is whimsical and a Brilliant example of Ruscha’s Pop and Post Modernist humour!

D5 had more than 150 featured artists represented alphabetically, with individual entries accessible via tabbed dividers in the Catalogue showing works and a Bio. The Catalogue and Poster are representing a crucial moment in International art and a great curatorial achievement of Harald Szeemann. For Edward Ruscha its a seminal moment as its the beginning of his International recognition outside of California and the USA.
