1971 Dutch Political Poster PSP Ontwapenend Pacifist Socialist Party by George Noordanus
1971. Found! A rare Poster that is always considered amongst the best Political posters of the late 20th Century (XXth). This Dutch Poster for the PSP party by George Noordanus is a classic. So many representations or views into this ‘window’ of a Poster can be found. Feminism, Free Love, Back to the Garden, Nature (Green), Anti-War, Anti-Bomb, Youth culture, Hippie Revolution all can be seen in this Poster beyond the local Dutch context but classically the International political vanguard. Copy reads “PSP Ontwapenend” (PSP Disarm).
The image is strong as is a exclamation of La joie de vivre! Imagine if the PSP was replaced by LSD! Image would still resonate in the same way. The Poster even anticipates, via the Cow, Pink Floyd’s 1975 LP "Atom Heart Mother".
The photo in the Pacifist Socialist Party (PSP) poster presents a pure and disarming image. A naked woman, her arms spread out, looking euphorically into the sky. The cow in the meadow adds a kind of earthy, unadulterated Dutchness. The poster was designed for the Dutch parliamentary elections of 1971. The photo drew a mixed response. Some thought it liberating, others considered it sexist and even offensive. (Rijks Museum, Amsterdam, Holland).
In permanent Collection of Rijks Museum, Amsterdam, Holland. Color Fotos show other George Noordanus PSP Designs, not for sale. A News clipping talking about ‘shock’ of Posters.

George Noordanus (B. 1945). Graphic designer. Studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Since 1970 he has worked as a graphic designer (including for the music magazine “OOR”). In recent years worked at advertising agency OgilvyOne. He is best known for his design of the PSP election poster from 1971 (the greenish poster with the naked woman and cow in the meadow).
Founded in 1957, The PSP The Pacifist Socialist Party (Dutch: Pacifistisch Socialistische Partij, PSP) was a democratic socialist Dutch political party. The PSP played a small role in Dutch politics. It is one of the predecessors of GroenLinks.
In 1972, the party's political leader, Hans Wiebenga (1917–2005) was replaced by the younger Bram van der Lek, who emphasized the environment as an important issue. He was unable to win seats in the 1972 elections. As party leader he would embrace extra-parliamentary protest of all kinds of groups: the PSP was involved in the nascent environmental, squatting, women's and students' movements. (Wiki).
