1977, RARE Studio 54 / Fiorucci. Poster made for The opening of Studio 54 1977. This Poster image was exhibited at Brooklyn Museum of Art exhibition ‘Studio 54: Night Magic’ March 13–November 08, 2020 (Fotos show exhibition views). A very unique poster that serves early evidence of collaboration of Studio 54 and Fiorucci. I have never seen this image for sale. RARE.

Fiorucci landed in NYC in late 1976 on East 59th Street. Studio 54 was born in 1977 on East 54th Street. As such, early in both entities life before they exploded onto/into the NYC and wider global conscious. The size for this poster is huge in consideration of ‘normal’ Fiorucci printing for posters (avg. 68 x 48cm (19” x 27”inches) vs 74 x 102cm (29” x 40”inches).

The ‘Artistic’ composition is not the usually overt Sexually driven image that was to come for Fiorucci. It does have a sense of ‘Future’. I do enjoy a sense of calm before the storm with this paysage mécanique juxtaposed/sandwiched between The Studio 54 and Fiorucci 1977 brands which were about to revolutionize Fashion and Culture- stunning. The blank Red is brilliant too! An analog machine that conjures an image of a mountain (The Matterhorn?). Its more a 70’s reference to Buck Rogers than say 2001: Space Odyssey. Again, The image used for the landscape is listed as ‘Christian Pieper’, a 19th Century landscape painter (German 1843-1934).

Graphically in execution its Fiorucci in the use of the Airbrush which may be attributed to Steve Lawrence and ‘NEWSTUDIO’ as printed on Poster. The Red colour field and the White marble is very ‘Memphis’ (The italian design movement active in mid 70’s to middle 80’s) in style. In sum, A rare gem that is a snapshot of 1977, Disco, and Fashion. The Aliens, Italians, and Disco debauchery have arrived!
